Prototypes and Salesman's Samples
Development of products involves creation of prototypes and samples, most of which never get to see the light of day. Since GI Joe has been so heavily collected for such a long time, we are fortunate to have a number of interesting examples in collections. This section will display a number of these items from some of the premiere collections worldwide. If you have items of this type that you are willing to share, please contact me!
PrototypesA prototype is a mock-up of an item that gives an idea of what a production piece might be like. They are often hand made or cobbled together out of existing parts. Like the handmade and painted resin figure above, from the collection of Matt Babek, they are often one of a kind pieces.

SamplesSalesmen's samples hearken back to when sales people hand carried samples to prospective buyers to generate orders. Since they often needed to be ready in advance of actual manufacture, these pieces often feature unusual pre-production features.
